Squirro 2.0.3 - Release Notes

Released: July 15, 2014

New Features:

Simplified Source Addition

The Sources screen of the projects has been revised. When adding sources, you are now presented with a more straightforward wizard. In that process you first select your input data format, and then enter any additional details.

The Follow Topic wizard is still available and allows you to enter a keyword or URL to automatically find and configure relevant sources.

Sorting of items by date and relevance

In the result list you can sort items by creation date and by relevance. The relevance sorting scores the items based on how well they match the current query or smart filter. Consult the Query Syntax documentation for more details.

Explain smart filter matches

To tune your smart filter and understand why it returns certain results, you can turn on it's explain mode. This will highlight all the smart filter terms that matched in the items and also show a detailled analysis at the bottom of the item's detail view.

Smartfilters from Office Documents

When uploading files to create a smart filter, you can now use office documents, instead of just text documents. This builds on top of the office document indexing from the last release and supports the same file formats:

  • Adobe Reader (.pdf)
  • Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls/.xlsx)
  • Richtext (.rtf)
  • OpenDocument Text (.odt)
  • OpenDocument Presentations (.odp)
  • OpenDocument Spreadsheets (.ods)
  • StarOffice Writer (.sxw)

Read-only role

When adding users to projects you can now choose the Reader role. This role only gives the user read-only access for that particular project. For embedding an iFrame or QlikView extension in a publicly accessible way it's recommended to use read-only users from now on.

This builds on top of the permissions from the last release and brings the total number of possible roles to four:

  • Reader: can read everything in the project and see all dashboards, saved searches, smart filters, sources.
  • Member: can change and delete everything in the project. Can not delete the project itself and can not manage members.
  • Administrator: has full rights of the project, including the ability to manage the project members and delete the project.
  • Owner: the project creator automatically becomes the owner. The project ownership can not currently be transferred. Permissions of the Owner are identical to the Administrator.

Note: read-only users are still able to create their own projects. Ability to limit that as well will be added in the future.

Web Crawler

The Squirro web crawler allows setting up of a crawl job to index foreign web sites. This is used for deep indexing of forums, specialized industry sites, etc.

The crawler is in it's early stages and at this point we are making it available on demand to selected partners.

Improvements

Sortable Dashboard Tabs

Dashboard tabs can now be ordered with drag & drop. The order is persisted and the same for all members of the project.

Similar Story Detection

The detection of similar stories has been improved considerably. When items are considered to be very similar by Squirro, they are collapsed into one result with a link to show the related similar stories.

Bug Fixes

  • Dashboard creation from search: this would sometimes loose the search context and then cause problems when viewing the dashboard.
  • Fix calculation of smart filter scores.
  • Deleting the last dashboard now works correctly.
  • The facet values are now always correctly placed (even when scrolled).
  • Fix stopword removal in smart filters.
